Cabo de Gata: One of Spain’s Natural Wonders

THE Cabo de Gata Natural Park of Nijar in Almeria has been proclaimed one of the seven natural wonders of Spain.

In a national competition organised by Allianz Global Assistance which attracted 80,000 votes and 5,000 tweets the Park claimed third place.Gaztelugatxe, in Vizcaya was the winner, followed by the Natural Park of Somiedo, in Asturias.

Behind Cabo de Gata were Las Medulas in Leon, the Natural Park of Las Lagunas de Ruidera, Fuente De in Cantabria and the seventh wonder was claimed by A Praia das Catedrais in Lugo.

It is worth noting that the Cabo de Gata finished ahead of Doñana National Park and Mount Teide in Tenerife and is the only entrant in the whole of Andalucia to finish in the top seven.

The name of Cabo de Gata has Phoenician origin, the volcanic area was abundant in the semi precious stone Agate, and in the Middle Ages was dubbed as Cape Agate.
