Global cyber-attack threat looming

Once the malware is triggered it monitors activity and captures private information such as banking details.

The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) is warning that computer users have a fortnight to prepare against a “powerful computer attack”. US officials held a press conference about the pending threat, which centres on two malware software programmes known as GOZeuS and CryptoLocker.

Computer users are warned to make sure their security software is up to date, and to run scans to check for any problems. It is also vital to back-up important files.

The malware typically infects a computer via attachments or links in emails, so users are warned to beware and to avoid suspicious-looking emails.

Once the malware is triggered it monitors activity and captures private information such as banking details.

The scammers then demand a ransom for regaining access to files they have locked.

At a Washington DC press conference, FBI Executive Assistant Director Robert Anderson revealed that a Russian man, Evgeniy Bogachev, 30, is the alleged leader of the gang behind the attacks.

Reportedly, mastermind Bogachev, who uses the online monikers “lucky12345” and “slavik”, has already made over £60m from the scam.

Computer experts advise that users update their operating system – especially if they have Windows, which is said to be the most vulnerable system – then run regular virus scans and keep security updated.

The NCA says that over 15,500 computers in the UK are infected, with many more being at risk from the threat.
