Almuñecar cleaning up for the summer

Almuñecar is being cleaned up in time for summer.

A team of four people is cleaning the seafront promenades of Almuñecar by hand to improve their appearance ready for the summer season. Almuñecar has eight kilometres of beaches of different sizes which are one of the town’s main attractions.

The Environmental Councillor, Luis Aragon, explained that with the correct tools, they are removing chewing-gum, weeds and rubbish from the areas nearest to the local beaches which are busiest in the summer.

They have been removed from Paseo San Cristobal and Prieto Moreno, and work is now focusing on El Altillo, Puerta del Mar and Velilla, and the final stop will be at El Pozuelo beach.

To further back up the campaign to keep the seafront area clean, the council has been holding talks with primary school children about the town’s natural resources.

Children from the Arcos de Torrecuevas Primary School recently visited local beaches were they were taught about the different species which live there, as well as species in the Mediterranean which need special protection.

They helped to clean the beaches and removed several fish hooks which they found tangled in seaweed along the shore.

The day ended with a visit to the Peñon del Santo Natural Landscape, where environmental activities were carried out.
