Hindu leader calls for Spain bullfighting ban

Hindus are calling for a complete ban on the practice of bullfighting (corrida) in Spain.

The request follows in the wake of three matadors being gored by bulls at the opening event of Madrid’s bullfighting season on May 20.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed is arguing that Spain should follow the example of its regions Catalonia and Canary Islands and ban the age-old tradition of bullfighting altogether.

Zed maintains that the sport is barbaric, inhumane and cruel and argues that Spain could easily find other ways to entertain its citizens and visitors.

Zed, President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, has urged other countries to outlaw the practice of bullfighting.

The Hindu leader feels that the EU should impose a Europe-wide ban on all blood-sports.

The bullfighting ban took effect in Catalonia from January 2012, while it has been banned in the Canary Islands since 1991.

Spain, which holds around 2,000 bullfights annually, has granted the tradition a cultural heritage status.
