Former ‘world’s fattest man’ dies

After being bedridden for over a decade the world’s former fattest man has died aged 48. Manuel Uribe, who once weighed in at 88 stone, passed away in hospital in Monterrey, Mexico, yesterday (Monday).

He had been admitted a few days earlier with heart problems.

Mr Uribe’s body had to be taken to the funeral parlour in a reinforced king-size bed on the back of a flatbed lorry.

Mr Uribe was once certified by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s heaviest man.

The record came in 2006 when he weighed 88 stone (560kg). Following that, a diet brought Mr Uribe’s weight down to 57 stone (394kg), but a crane was still needed to take him to hospital.

Mr Uribe’s 2008 wedding to Claudia Solis made international headlines. It was one of the few times he left his home in recent years. Unable to walk, the groom was taken to the ceremony by crane.
