Vespa is king in the Axarquia

VESPA: a classic ride.

The Axarquia area showed its passion for the Vespa scooter by hosting the areas first Vespa rally.

More than 150 Vespa fans from all over Andalucia and Melilla descended on the quiet town of Torre del Mar for a non-competitive “fun run” around the villages of the area.

Manuel Arbol is 77 years old; he bought his first Vespa in 1961 and says he loves them as much as his children.

This reunion is the first of its kind in Torre del Mar and has gathered fans from all over the south.

The “rally” started out from the lighthouse in Torre del Mar and toured around the approximately 30 villages that make up the eastern Axarquia area, it was a total distance of 120 kilometres with no winners as the objective was to enjoy the bikes.

At lunchtime they stopped at Asador La Maroma for the prize giving ceremony with prizes to the oldest, the one with the most chrome, the oldest rider and so on.

There were also gifts from the sponsors in the form of a night in a hotel in Torre del Mar, t-shirts, bottles of oil and even a professional caricature portrait.

A good time was had by all and they hope to repeat it next year.
