Celebrating the San Isidro pilgrimage

Pilgrims: on the road.

More than 50 carriages, almost 100 horse riders and in excess of 200 people took part in the pilgrimage of San Isidro of Almuñecar last Sunday.

The pilgrims made their journey from the church of El Salvador using the paths of the outlying meadows and along the Verde River bed to Caicillos.

The pilgrimage was organised by the council of Almuñecar and various local brotherhoods, among them the Hermandad Virgen Madre.

After hearing mass at the church the participants set of on foot, horseback and carriage, escorted by the Local Police.

The head of the pilgrimage was an image of San Isidro on a carriage pulled by oxen and accompanied by pilgrims of all ages. After the lead carriage there were an array of different carriages and caravans all specially decorated for the occasion.

The procession arrived at Caicillos at around 2pm and was followed by many festivities and parties during which the figure of San Isidro was carried, on foot, up to the chapel at Torrecuevas.
