Spain’s royal family launched their new Twitter account yesterday (Tuesday) and are already asking users to be “correct” and “well-mannered” when leaving comments on the page.
The page, with its Twitter handle @casareal, went live at around 12pm, with a greeting to users in Spain’s four official languages (Castellano, Catalan, Basque and Galician) as well as in English.
The account’s aim is to inform users of the day-to-day activities of the royal family and the Zarzuela palace.
The account warned that it is an ‘institutional profile and not personal in nature at all’. Visitors to the page are also asked to be polite when commenting on the royal tweets.
Spain’s royal family have come relatively late to the Twittersphere: the UK’s Queen Elizabeth II has kept royal watchers informed via @BritishMonarchy for years. Prince Andrew also has his own account (@TheDukeofYork) while Prince Charles uses the @ClarenceHouse handle.
The popularity of Spain’s royals has plummeted following a recent corruption scandal involving King Juan Carlos’ son-in-law Iñaki Urdangarin.
The Twitter launch coincided with the judgement from Spain’s tax authorities that Urdangarin was in fact guilty of tax fraud in 2007 and 2008. He reportedly owed €240,000.
