Bulls have scored a symbolic victory at Madrid’s prestigious Las Ventas ring by injuring three matadors and forcing event organizers to call off the historic bullfight yesterday.
The event, in the 12th corrida of the famed San Isidro festival, was called off last night (Tuesday) after bulls gored two matadors and tossed a third into the air.
It was the first time in 35 years that a fight was stopped at the Las Ventas ring because of matador injuries.
Author Ernest Hemingway described the Madrid event, which lasts for nearly a month, as the ‘World Series’ of bull fighting.
Today, the first torero, David Mora, was still being treated in a Madrid hospital but was said to be out of danger and recovering well.
Reportedly, Mora’s femoral artery was pierced in the goring, resulting in the matador requiring immediate emergency surgery.
The other two bullfighters, Antonio Nazare and Jimenez Fortes were expected to be discharged later.
The two bulls that wreaked havoc were: ‘Deslio’, a 532-kilogram El Ventorrillo breeding ranch bull, and the 537-kilogram ‘Feten’ of the Los Chospes ranch.
In Spain bullfighting is a traditional spectacle, with the season running from March to October, but it has long been controversial.
