The internet increases a worker’s productivity but does not reduce the amount of time they spend at work.
According to a study, done by the magazine Panorama Social, the greater autonomy and flexibility which the new technologies give workers also increases the pressure to be constantly connected; technology also favours the ‘blurring of lines’ between personal and professional life.
As far as work is concerned the study concluded that there is a general tendency in developed countries to reduce the amount of time physically spent at work, but this is not due to technology, but rather a further blurring of the lines so there is no real ‘home’ time or‘work’ time.
Sixty eight per cent of Spanish households are connected to the internet; this is very far behind the European average of 88 per cent, but with a 95 per cent mobile connection Spain is ahead of the curve.
