The children are being treated at Newport's Royal Gwent Hospital.
A mother was arrested in the UK yesterday after apparently trying to slit the throats of her three young children at the breakfast table.
The woman, 27, is said to have used a kitchen knife to attack her seven-year-old son and 16-month-old daughter in Newport, South Wales.
Reportedly, neighbours heard screaming coming from the modern terraced house in Newport at around 8am yesterday.
The children’s grandfather is said to have heard the commotion and intervened, wrestling the knife from his daughter.
The children, who sustained serious neck injuries, are said to be in a serious but stable condition at Newport’s Royal Gwent Hospital.
The woman is also said to have turned the knife on herself, and required medical treatment.
Reports indicate that the mother and her three children were staying with her parents.
Police have detained the woman on suspicion of attempted murder and have recovered the alleged weapon used in the attack.
A Gwent Police spokesperson said: “A 27-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
“We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this time.”
