The price of life in Romania

National Police in Figueras, Cataluña, have freed a young woman, of Romanian extraction, who had been sold for a mere €1,500.

The woman was being forced, through threats and sexual violence, to work as a prostitute in brothels.

The young woman, who is now aged 19, was purchased when she was a minor for €1,500 by two pimps who exploited her in Italy and Spain.

A few months later they sold her on to another couple of pimps, again for €1,500, who took her to work at a club in Figueras.

This case came to the attention of the police when the Romanian Embassy was anonymously warned that a young woman had been sold into sexual slavery in Spain.

Once free the woman explained that she had been captured in Romania and immediately taken abroad, she wasn’t sure where, to work as a prostitute.

Not only was she forced into a life of sexual slavery but she was also constantly abused by her captors to make sure she was always scared and would not think of going to the police.

A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of selling the victim; they stand accused of white slaving, sexual aggression to a minor and extreme threatening behaviour.

Police investigations are ongoing.
