Domestic Violence Death Toll Rises as Women’s Day Approaches

DOMESTIC violence continues to take its toll in Spain with the death of an English teacher in Torremolinos.

The body of the 47-year-old woman was found by her parents with her throat cut at her home in Decano Miguel Marengo Street. A 46-year-old man was taken to Malaga’s Virgen de la Victoria Hospital suffering from an overdose. It is thought he had tried to commit suicide.

Police sources said that the couple had recently separated. The victim, who worked at a local language school, had not made any form of official complaint against her former partner.

The death makes grim reading in the run-up to International Women’s Day on Saturday. The death toll of people who have died as a result of domestic violence now stands at 15 across Spain so far this year.

Also in Andalucía, in Chiclana de la Frontera a 79-year-old man is said to have killed himself after gunning down his wife, aged 76.

Neighbours alerted police after hearing a gunshot, with medic finding the woman in her home in a shanty housing community. The man’s body was later found with a gunshot wound to the head.
