Nerja Carnival starts today

Nerja carnival

The Axarquia is getting ready as one of the most important celebrations in the region is about to start.

Nerja Carnival takes place from today (Thursday) until Sunday and neighbouring towns are invited to take part.

A well-established fiesta in the town, the Carnival sees locals and visitors dress up in bright and imaginative costumes.

Participants get involved in the Carnival from the beginning of the year, devoting their free time and creativity in making it possible.

This year’s edition starts today (Thursday) with an opening speech at the town’s cultural centre from 9pm.

It continues tomorrow (Friday) with competitions for best fancy dress for both adults and children, reaching its high point on Saturday with a float parade through the streets of the town.

Celebrations end on Sunday with the traditional ‘Entierro del Boqueron’ (the burial of the anchovy), a quirky parade in a funeral style to say goodbye to the Carnival until the following year.
