Axarquia councils join forces to protect ambulance drivers

The councils wish to raise to speed limit from 80 to 100kph

AXARQUIA towns close to the Las Pedrizas motorway are joining forces to prevent emergency vehicle drivers being fined.

The councils of Alfarnate, Alfarnatejo and Riogordo are backing the Deputy Mayor of Colmenar in his proposal to raise the speed limit of the road.

Drivers of emergency vehicles complained that they are losing points from their licences due to a speed trap between Casabermeja and Malaga City.

They also complained that the speed trap, which measures the time it takes vehicles to get between two points, and calculates speed based on this, causes accidents when drivers brake suddenly.

The joint petition will ask the General Traffic Department to change the speed limit of the motorway from 80kph to 100.

Meanwhile, sources at the DGT said the speed limit on the stretch of the motorway where the speed trap operates cannot be changed.

They claimed the section is dangerous due to its geographical features, and added it is up to the Ministry of Public Works to change the speed limit.

The DGT also said that fines on any emergency vehicle driver are shelved, attributing any lost points in the drivers’ licences to an “error.”
