MANDARIN segments could substitute New Year’s Eve grapes if Castellon citrus growers have their way.
It is tradition to eat – or swallow – a grape as the clock in the Puerta del Sol, Madrid, rings in the New Year to ensure a happy and lucky 12 months.
The custom was allegedly introduced by Alicante province grape-growers in the early 20th century after a bumper harvest.
Now Castellon growers have suggested seeing in the New Year with mandarin segments instead.
The Castellon Chamber of Commerce is backing the initiative. Promoting the area’s mandarins will boost the local economy and products, said the provincial president Lola Guillamon. “It’s a lovely idea,” Guillamon claimed.
