Málaga CF coach, Bernd Schuster, held a press conference at La Rosaleda following the match against Club Atlético Osasuna.
The German-born coach analyses the match: “We had a strong advantage over the rival and were in control of the game. We really deserved to be 3-0 up as we worked hard and performed well, but as has occurred in other matches, we were in a comfortable situation and then things went wrong as the rival scored some good, pacey goals. It’s hard for us to see what it takes to win a game, particularly as we had a three-goal advantage. We let this match slip through our fingers and lacked concentration, which allowed the rival to take control. The same happened in Bilbao the other day in what was a very similar match.”
Looking ahead to the return leg, Schuster says that this match is typical of the character of the Copa del Rey: “You see games like this a lot in this competition, where one team is on top, then the rival takes over etc. We lost a great chance to win here tonight, however we’ve still got a chance to turn things around. We need to stay focused for the 90 minutes in Pamplona. It’ll be tough of course, but we know we’re capable so we need to stay positive. We’ll see what happens, but we’ll focus on playing well and qualifying to the next round.”
With regards to the possible causes of the Osasuna turnaround, the coach adds: “I can see the team has improved in various aspects of game play, particularly the finer details…it’s not a case of complacency, it’s difficult for any of us to know what happened here tonight. We’re all extremely disappointed.”
