A NEW device was launched today to enable private users to route a home Internet connection through the Tor network.
Tor is a free software and an open network which helps to defend the user against network surveillance. The Tor privacy tool which has previously been used by activists, criminals and American intelligence departments has now been repackaged for sale to the mass market.
The Safeplug, currently retailing at US$49, is a small box which plugs into a home Internet router, acting as a proxy server to reroute the computer to the Tor network. It also has an blocker for online advertising which can be disabled if required.
