Tio Baron Jose Domenec Hernandez
THE oldest resident in the Almanzora Valley has passed away at the grand old age of 105 years and six months.
Jose Domenec Hernandez, or Tio Baron as he was known, was born on May 12, 1908 and lived in the town of Alcontar with three of his seven children.
He worked in the mines of Seron from the mid 1930’s to the end of the 1960’s, walking four hours a day to get to work. During the civil war he was called up to go to the front in Castellon to fight in the republican ranks. After the mines closed in 1968 he worked in the coal trade which was thriving in the Sierra of Seron during that time.
He was often seen going about his daily business and even received a birthday cake every year from the mayor of Alcontar.
