Volunteers pick up 150 kilos of rubbish in Los Escullos

Beach Cleaning Day took centre stage in El Embarcadero yesterday, when a group of volunteers participated in an event organized by the Junta de Andalucia.

The activities were celebrated at Parque Natural Cabo de Gata-Níja, including various work-shops and a guided visit to El Albardinal botanical garden. Around 50 people helped during the day, including adults and kids.

The cleaning was a big success, nearing 150 kilos of rubbish picked up throughout the day.  A group meeting was held at the end to discuss the main causes of the waste problem, concluding that even though the ocean is responsible for depositing a small amount of rubbish on the beach, it´s the visitors’ bad behavior that needs to change.

Jose Manuel Ortiz, Provincial Delegate of Andalucia, hopes people will start taking more care of the natural areas, following the good example of many others and taking their rubbish with them once they finish their visit.
