Lance Armstrong returns Olympic medal

COLORADO SPRINGS, Sept. 12 (UPI) — Disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong returned his 2000 Olympic bronze medal to U.S. Olympics officials, fulfilling a demand by the International Olympic Committee. 

The IOC stripped Armstrong of the medal he won at the Sydney Games in the road cycling time trials. The action by Olympics officials came after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency disqualified all of Armstrong’s results from 1998 on. 

Those include the seven Tour de France titles Armstrong won form 1999-2005, with the Olympic bronze medal among his other achievements. 

Armstrong was found to have used performance-enhancing substances and, after years of denying the use, during a January interview with Oprah Winfrey he admitted to doping. 

Armstrong posted on his Twitter account that the medal was in the hands of the USOC, which confirmed receipt of the award.
