Sentence review for Alfaz shooting

THE courts will review Ramon Garcia’s 18-year prison term for murdering his sister.

He was found guilty last year of shooting 17-year-old Rocio as she slept on the morning of April 4, 2009 in their Alfaz del Pi home.

He had only wanted to frighten her, Garcia said, maintaining that the anabolic steroids he took clouded his judgement.  Neither was he aware that the shotgun was loaded and the safety catch off, he insisted.

This was disputed in court as his parents had at first admitted that the shotgun was empty.

They later claimed during the trial that it was already loaded, although the judge conceded that reversing their earlier statement stemmed from a desire to protect their son from prison.

Garcia was obsessed with his sister to the extent that he had a tattoo with her name, her friends later said.

Some went so far as to hint that he had subjected her to non-consensual abuse.  All agreed, however, that he was domineering and reacted with fury when she decided to introduce her boyfriend to their parents.
