Grants promised for fire damage in the Sierra de Tramuntana, Mallorca

INVESTMENT: Farmland to be restored.

THE Mallorca Government will pay €136,000 in grants to fund investments in areas affected by fire in the Sierra de Tramuntana.

This is the first of a series of actions which have been approved for environmentally important areas in Estellencs and Andratx by the Tot(s) per sa Serra Committee.

The Tot(s) per sa Serra Committee will coordinate all public and private actions put in place to restore the area burned by forest fires which have affected 2,335 hectares in Andratx, Estellencs and Calvia.

The committee will study the current state of burned areas and which infrastructures were affected.

Estellencs will receive €111,000 assigned following 24 requests from 2009 and 2010, while Andratx will get €25,000 from six requests for the same years. The money is to be used to restore crops, borders, water facilities, farm maintenance and private properties.

This was announced by the Councillor for Agriculture, Environment and Territory, Biel Company.

He said the burned remains will be removed, and work will be carried out to prevent the land from eroding before further action is taken to restore the landscape to its former glory.
