Mariano Rajoy
THE PP party’s ex-treasurer Luis Barcenas was ostensibly sacked for involvement in the Gurtel scandal of illegal commissions and irregular government contracts.
He remained on the PP payroll for a variety of reasons, not all of which are clear.
Finally Barcenas pulled the plug on PP party funding.
Why? Because the party did not protect him from the Gurtel investigation. Because it did not stop the prosecution department from reopening the case. Because it stopped paying him once his multi-million Swiss affairs became public knowledge.
Days later, copies of PP party accounts appeared in El Pais. Once he was remanded these were supplemented by Rajoy’s text-messages in El Mundo.
Revenge is a dish best eaten cold, according to some. For others it tastes best piping hot.
