Spanish tennis players make it in to second round at Wimbledon

Spain’s David Ferrer eventually won a tough first round 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 on Tuesday with Wimbledon newcomer Martin Alund on, Centre Court.

The 4th seed, contesting his 11th successive Wimbledon, will now meet fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, who recorded a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 victory over qualifier Teymuraz Gabashvili.

Earlier this month, Ferrer reached his first Grand Slam championship final at Roland Garros, where he lost to Rafa Nadal, who went out of Wimbledon in the first round yesterday.

Feliciano Lopez was drawn against the 19th seed, Gilles Simon, with a 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 victory over the Frenchman, saving six set points in the third set tie-break.

Albert Ramos went out to the 8th seed, Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro, Marcel Granollers lost to the in-form Frenchman Richard Gasquet, the 9th seed, and Dani Gimeno-Traver battled for five sets before finally losing to Germany’s Daniel Brands.

In the doubles tournament, the Spanish pairing of Pablo Andujar and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez lost in five sets to the Czech/Slovak pairing of Cermak and Mertinak.
