Taking care of the family top priority for motorists

FAMILY TRIP: Motorists more careful with children in car.

IF you want to find a safe driver pick a family man. A survey by the Spanish Road Safety Federation (FESVIAL) reveals that motorists tend to drive more carefully when they have their family in the car with them.

After interviewing 1,400 people who made between two and five long distance jopurneys a year, FESVIAL found that people perceived the threat of an accident as greater when they had their children in the car.

The survey revealed that 72 per cent of women and 61 per cent of men were more scared of having an accident when their family was with them.

The result of the higher perceived danger was that drivers took more care rather than risk their family’s safety, with eight in 10 saying they paid more attention to speed limits and road rules.

And on long trips they were likely to take breaks more frequently and for longer- two to three hours- to give the children a break.
