THE Catalan government has rejected a proposal to request that the central government ban the burka. The proposal to ban any kind of garment which totally covers a person’s face in public facilities and in the street was made by the political group Ciutadans.
However, the request to change the Religious Freedom Law was rejected by all groups in the Catalan parliament except for the conservative Partido Popular which abstained from voting.
Ciutadans argues that using garments such as the burka goes against “safety, public order and equal rights between men and women.” However, their proposal was said to be “populist and xenophobic” by other parties.
