A LOCAL councillor and his brother have been arrested by Guardia Civil who seized 180 marihuana plants in Almogia. The Guardia Civil had detected a rise in the number of drug sales in the town and surrounding area, and found there was a laboratory locally where marihuana was grown and prepared for sales.
They set up surveillance at a house in the town centre and identified the dealers. When they warned them they were going to search the property, they threw the plants out of the window into a neighbouring field.
The detainees were local left-wing Izquierda Unida councillor, Diego Aranda, 63, and his brother. He has said that he will resign from his position.
He spent a night in custody before appearing before a judge who charged him with drug-related crimes. Aranda said the plants were his and that he grew them as the drug relieved him of joint pain.
