€400k demanded in Mojacar hotel row case

Mojacar Councillor Jessica Simpson identifies affect closure of hotel will have on economy

THE owner of the Mojacar’s Hotel Moresco allegedly owes the Junta de Andalucía almost €400,000.

Arturo Fernandez, chairman of the Cantoblanco Group was paid the money as a grant in 2009 by the incumbent mayor, Rosa Maria Cano, in order to refurbish the hotel.

Two years later, inspectors found that the re-modelling did not comply with local building legislation following which the council took legal action recover the loan, which the hotel group in turn claimed impeded progress of the works’ completion.

A member of the government’s Public Works, Housing, Tourism and Commerce committee in Almeria, Encarna Caparros, has demanded immediate repayment together with the resignation of the town’s leaders who, he claims “have created alarm and democratic disgrace.”

Mojacar councillor Jessica Simpson told EWN: “The Moresco was the only hotel in the old town and its closure seriously affects the economy. Arturo Fernandez is Vice President of the Spanish Confederation of Business and Industry, and is currently under investigation for allegedly making salary payments in black money.

“It is disgraceful that he not only abandoned the hotel completely, having received money to fix it and never proceeded, but also left debts of €62,000 in unpaid IBI contributions.”
