Region’s airport under review

ALMERIA AIRPORT: Under review.

THE department responsible for tourism is uncertain over central government’s plans for Almeria airport.

A glance at the list of small airports under review in the new state plan did not reveal the name of Almeria. The plan is examining the effects of restricting operating hours and cancelling certain routes at airports around the country.

To date there is no word on the future plans of AENA, the public company which runs the airport, apart from confirmation that it will continue to implement cost cutting measures in order to balance the books during the current economic crisis.

It has stated that at this time it has no plans to decommission Almeria airport.

The government is examining the viability of airports with fewer than a million passengers a year and Almeria falls into this category.

The Department of Tourism has reminded the government that the airport has played a key role in the restructuring and development of AlmeriaProvince and is a vital asset towards sustained growth.

In response a government spokesman confirmed that no action would be taken without a thorough examination of the cause and effect of any closures.
