NOW OPEN: Ministry officials inspect new road bridge plans.
THE Ministry of Public Works has re-opened a major road artery.
One of the numerous casualties of September 28 2012, Black Friday in the AlmanzoraValley, when the worst floods in living memory brought devastation to a vast expanse of the region, was the AP-7 toll road bridge between Vera and Cartagena.
It has taken five months for the Highway Authority to re-connect the bridge which linked the motorway to the important towns of Mazarron, Aguilas, Pulpí and Cuevas de Almanzora.
For the technically minded, the constructors had to demolish the existing bridge, before piling down for 21.5 metres, inserting 1.2 metre diameter pillars, then placing 16, 40 metre long prefabricated pre-stressed concrete beams over four bays.
The toll roads operators recently declared bankruptcy, having accrued debts of €550 million.
The highway was opened in March 2007 at a reported cost of €650,000 million.
