Leading Mojacar councillor retires

RESIGNATION: Mojacar mayor Rosa Maria Cano has lost a key ally

THE Mayor of Mojacar, Rosa María Cano has lost a key ally and cornerstone of her government.

Stroke victim María Luisa López Pérez, a PP alderman since 2007, has bowed to doctor’s advice and quit office with immediate effect.

In a cabinet reshuffle, Sports and Health Councillor Fernando Aparicio also takes on the Public Safety and Transportation portfolio, whilst Raquel Belmonte the Culture Councillor, adds education to her workload.

Maria Luisa Lopez said: “There is no problem with the government team, much less with the mayor. People will think it’s odd that I am giving up a salary, but there is no hidden scandal”

Along with the incumbent mayor, Maria Luisa was one of four councillors called before a judge in 2009 to answer charges that the council had issued a license annually for four years running to a beach bar (chiringuito) without asking for permits or paperwork, whilst refusing to acknowledge complaints from neighbouring bars and restaurants.

The mayor angered residents and traders last year by appearing to turn a blind eye to the law governing noise levels in the popular beach resort. Business owners were furious when, after spending thousands of Euros on noise limiter systems, the law was changed and the equipment became obsolete.

Andalucían law prohibits music altogether in bars and restaurants that don’t have music licences, which are difficult to obtain due to stringent sound-proofing regulations. Consequently very few of the bars on the playa are officially licenced.
