Spain Urged to clean up its act

SPAIN has been advised to deal “aggressively and rapidly” with corruption.

Fast action needed to be taken to avoid undermining Spain’s confidence in its politicians, said America’s ambassador in Madrid, Alan Solomont.

The Spanish are currently being asked to make “difficult sacrifices,” Solomont told Europa press.

He made no mention of alleged, and apparently documented, salary top-ups to the highest-ranking PP politicians from party funds.  He saw no reason for Spain to feel ashamed, he replied on being asked if he believed it was especially corrupt.

Spain has a history of great success and overcame other adversities in the past, Solomont said. He did not doubt that it would be able to rise above its present difficulties, he added.

A positive aspect of any crisis was the way that different sectors joined forces in search of solutions, according to Solomont.  He had perceived “common interest” in tacking Spain’s current situation, he said.
