BURNT OUT: Blaze destroys restaurant's pergola and garden area
WITNESSES are asked to come forward as investigations continue as to the cause of two fires that occurred in urbanisation Villamartin, Orihuela Costa.
Fire fighters from Torrevieja were first called to a fire outside a restaurant, currently undergoing refurbishment, close to the entrance of the golf course at around 2am on New Years Day.
The blaze destroyed a pergola over ten metres in diameter, as well as a pine tree and a palm tree in the area outside the building. Fire crews spent 40 minutes and thousands of litres of water trying to put out the flames.
Early indications are that a stray firework from a nearby News Year’s Eve Celebration setting alight debris may have been the culprit.
After crews returned to the station in Torrevieja they were called back to Villamartin after reports of a fire in a private vehicle which was parked near the golf course.
A piece of concrete was found inside the car, which authorities believe was used to smash the window and set the car alight.
