Pollution alarm order for landfill

THE Les Canyades landfill plant in Campello must install a pollution detection system.

The order followed an inspection by the regional government’s Labour department at the request of the Les Canyades Works Committee.

Workers reported their employers FCC, for exposing them to potential workplace hazards because of the way the plant was run.  Toxic emissions, high temperatures as well as deficient hygiene and work conditions were amongst their complaints.

Although the department’s inspectors did not find dangerous accumulations of noxious gases workers were nevertheless at risk, their report warned.

Steps should be taken to ensure that employees at the plant are not exposed to carbon monoxide, sulphuric acid, ammonia and methane, they said.

Campello town hall has also complained about Les Canyades.  It has asked the regional environment department on two occasions to close down the plant owing to the foul smell and potential health risks to local residents.
