Route maps for cyclists

PROTECCION CIVIL: Taking care of cyclists.

NEW maps of cycling routes in the mountains between Muchamiel and San Vicente  del Raspeig  have been produced to help rescue services.

Cycling, popular with amateurs and professionals all around Spain, is not without its dangers. In addition to the obvious perils of riding a bicycle on main roads – 47 cyclists died in road accidents in 2012 – mountain routes present other hazards.

Now San Vicente del Raspeig’s branch of Proteccion Civil, has charted favourite mountain routes between the town and Muchamiel. Mapped, colour-coded and ranked according to the dangers they pose they also list potential difficulties and obstacles for emergency services.

The assessments, which also give longitude and latitude coordinates, will be distributed to the Local Police, the Fire Service, and the 112 Emergency services.  This, it is hoped, will reduce the response time if they are called out.

The plans will also be available from the Valencian Community’s Cycling Federation, sports clubs and sports shops.

The routes themselves have now been signposted, with symbols on rocks and other landmarks for the information of cyclists following the routes.  This will also help in identifying their exact location should they need to call for help.
