SQUATTERS in Macael marble quarries face eviction after the town hall filed a lawsuit.
The council claims it is worried for the safety of quarry workers as well as petty thefts allegedly committed by the settlers.
Macael Mayor Raul Martinez explained that legal tile manufacturers have welcomed the lawsuit due to the unfair competition they have been suffering at the hands of the illegal settlers for many years.
Martinez also said that the quarries belong to the town hall, which was not receiving any money in return, and illegal workers were subjected to appalling working conditions.
He added that some of the settlements have already been dismantled and that quick legal action is being taken against those still squatting at the quarries.
