INNOVATIVE: Produces 80 hectometers annually
TORREVIEJA’s desalination plant has been named as one of the hundred most innovative infrastructure projects in the world.
Of 100 projects chosen by consultancy firm KPMG just two were selected in Spain. One was the desalination plant in Torrevieja and the other Barcelona’s Smart City project. The Ministry of Environment project is intended to produce 80 hectometres of water for irrigation and human consumption every year. Construction began in 2007 with an investment of €300 million and is planned to be operational in 2013.
