THE resort town of Javea will pay tribute to the English author Charles Dickens during a series of events programmed for October and November. These will include live theatre, films, lectures and workshops organised by the local council in collaboration with local organisations.
The festival will kick-off on Monday October 1st in the riurau d’Arnauda with an ‘Introduction to Dickens.’ A special presentation in English by Professor Michael Hollington recognised as one of the leading experts on the life of the great man.
Another feature scheduled for October 16 to 20 is the Javea Players studio production, ‘What the Dickens,’ an evening of story excerpts and songs woven round the author and his Dickensian world.
Local schools will also be involved, reflecting on some of the great moments from Oliver Twist. Not to be outdone, the Cultural Centre will be screening a comprehensive programme of Dickens ‘hit’ movies during the two months.
These will include ‘Great Expectations,’ ‘Scrooge’ and ‘Oliver Twist.’ In order to ensure the life of Dickens is enjoyed by as many people as possible, the organisers say that all events will be translated into both English and Castilian.
English speakers will be backed by ‘Power-point’ Spanish translations; English movies will support Spanish subtitles and Spanish orientated events explained in English. Full details of the Dickens Festival are available from Javea town hall or any tourist office in the city, port or Arenal.
