THE 1,801 babies that were born at Torrecardenas hospital in 2012 have benefited from the early detection program for hearing problems. The new test program is a part of the Andalucian Health Council’s comprehensive plan for Hospitalised Children, which insures that new born babies with hearing deficits are identified as soon as possible. This allows their treatment and rehabilitation to begin practically at birth, and helps fight the possible speech, emotional and social repercussions that often occur as a result of early hearing difficulties. The test has recently been included in the hospital’s standardised early care detection tests, which test the babies’ health on multiple levels, preventing possible pathologies that could worsen over time and hinder their development if left unattended.
