VELEZ-MALAGA’S town planning department has furthered its plan to ban discos in El Copo area of Torre del Mar. The department has provisionally approved a modification of the General Urban Development Plan (PGOU) which will prohibit this type of business to open in the area.

This measure has been taken due to neighbours complaining about the noise levels in the area for the past several years. The changes in urban planning have not been completely defined given that the noise pollution studies, which will show the problematic areas, have not yet concluded.

However, the modification of the PGOU will not affect bars and cafés which play music, as the department had initially planned. This is thanks to a petition by the local business association, which argued that the area’s tourism needs leisure establishments as well.

Meanwhile, residents of Los Morteros Urbanization in Torre de Benagalbon, Rincon de la Victoria, have complained about the noise coming from a ‘chiringuito’ (beach restaurant). The head of the area’s residents’ association, backed by their lawyer, pointed out that the location of the establishment violates Malaga’s coastal planning laws.

He also complained that the administration is not taking responsibility for the situation and that for five years “15 residents have to endure very loud music, shouting and parties until late at night coming from this chiringuito every summer.”  The owner of the establishment claims that the plaintiff has a personal grudge against him and that the music he plays in his chiringuito is always at a low level.
