Relative poverty in Ronda

FORTY to 50 per cent of the inhabitants of the Serrania de Ronda live on less than €400 a month. A research paper was written up by the Volunteer Coordination Association to gauge the economic, educational and social situations of the people of seven different towns, including Arriate, Atajate, Benalauria, Algatocin, Cortes de la Frontera, Benaojan and Pujerra.

The population sample was of 11,000 people from the area, and the results have shown that approximately 50 per cent are living in a state of relative poverty, most of which are young people who are having problems accessing the work market. The study proposes cooperative social measures, consuming local produce and improving infrastructures to deal with the area’s socioeconomic troubles.
