Acid injuries in Denia

TWO workers at the Edar sewerage works in Denia have been seriously injured following an accidental escape of sulphuric acid at the site.

The injured inhaled the toxic fumes when one of the tanks of acid, used to clean out equipment, developed a leak.

The purification works are situated only one kilometre from the road between Pedreguer and the hamlet of La Jara. The victims are men aged 55 and 34, who at the time of writing are reported to be in a critical, but stable condition. They were immediately transferred by a unit of Emergency Medical Service (SAMU) and a Basic Life Support (BLS), to the intensive care unit of Denia Hospital.

The reason for the escape of the toxic gasses has not yet been determined, and an investigation has been launched by authorities to determine the cause.
