International fugitive nabbed in Denia

By Paul Deed

AN Albanian man, 31, arrested in Denia last week, was wanted for crimes in Barcelona and Italy.

He was sought on an international arrest warrant issued by Italian authorities, said a spokesman for the National Police.

The man was on a crime spree in Denia, breaking into 12 restaurants and shops using the same method: forcing bars and shutters with a hydraulic jack, he then immobilised alarms and video cameras before looting the premises at leisure, emptying cash registers and slot machines by breaking them open.

The man was wanted for theft in Italy and for assault on a policeman in that country, for which he had already been sentenced in his absence to four years prison.
Authorities in Barcelona also had an arrest warrant out on the man for burglary offences in the city.
