Parents accused of sexually abusing baby

A COUPLE was arrested by the National Police in Almeria for allegedly sexually abusing their 17-month-old daughter.

The young couple was arrested after doctors sounded the alarm when they noticed injuries on her genitals that may have been the result of sexual assault. The parents testified in court and were later released with charges. However, they will have to go to court whenever their presence is needed throughout the investigation.

The paediatricians at Torrecardenas Hospital had been examining the child due to “strong abdominal pains” when they discovered the lesions. After this, the doctors decided to activate the Detection and intervention protocol for childhood sexual abuse. As a result of the doctors’ report, the National Police’s Family Special Service Group began an investigation to clarify what had happened. After questioning the baby’s parents, the officers decided to arrest the couple.

The baby was taken to the Indalo children’s centre by the Junta’s Child Protection Service after being discharged from the hospital. However, the Junta is studying the possibility of finding her an emergency foster home for no more than six months. The Child Protection services have not considered close family members as an option for foster care, because they have not yet been able to rule out their involvement in the abuse. The Police are investigating the child’s extended family and waiting for expert reports on the possible abuse.
