Street selling ban

WITH the arrival of summer, Nerja police are working to eradicate unlicensed street vending.

Better weather and the financial difficulties experienced by many families affected by unemployment and the economic crisis mean there are more itinerant sellers than ever.

Many of those offering goods in the streets or to clients on bar and cafe terraces are African. Prompted by complaints from local shop and business-owners, Nerja’s police are now embarking on a programme to discourage illegal trading.

Around 500 items have been confiscated over the past weeks, mainly clothes, accessories, fake designer sunglasses and toys, according to the Policia Local.

The most popular fake clothing labels are Ralph Lauren and Lacoste, while sunglasses are usually passed off as Ray-Ban, Prada or Gucci.

The crackdown is expected to continue in various districts of Nerja with increased patrols.  They will be paying special attention to the Burriana beach, the Balcon de Europa promenade and streets in the centre of town, police announced.
