SUN loungers and parasols at Benidorm’s Aqualandia Park were replaced by 600 stationary bikes to accommodate hundreds of athletes who spent the day pedaling like crazy.
They were participating in the European Cycle Meeting, held last Saturday which attracted to the Benidorm aficionados of spinning, where asphalt normally is exchanged for the gym, and the bikes are wheeless, in that the wheels spin, but the bike remains static. A popular exercise in gym classes but not normally an outdoor event.
The meet lasted for twenty hours, after which the cyclists climbed off their bikes, no doubt fitter and exhausted, but all without having moved an inch. With real wheels, they could have been in Barcelona.
