Families spend less on clothes since recession

FAMILIES spend 40 per cent less on clothes than they did before the onset of the current financial crisis.

Last year, the average Spanish family spent €1,130 on clothes, accessories and textiles, which is five per cent less that the previous year and 40 per cent less than in 2006, according to Acotex.

Sales fell in clothes shops for the fifth year running, this time by one per cent to €17.1 billion, almost 25 per cent less than six years ago.

Over that period, almost 13,000 shops have closed, 650 last year alone, and 29,677 jobs have been lost.

Figures for the first months of this year show that sales are falling 6.4 per cent and the trend is set to continue, leading to a total fall of between two and five per cent.

Business associations now report that 35 per cent of their yearly taking come from the sales, compared to the 25 per cent of years ago.

Residents in the Balearic Islands spend the most on clothes, with €487 per person, compared to €363 in Galicia.
