THE Mayor and municipal staff of El Borge have begun doing the cleaning themselves to save money.
The first to set an example was the socialist mayor, Salvador Fernandez, who began cleaning the toilets and his office in order to save money and keep all the current staff on the payroll.
When he took up the position of mayor, he found the 1,000-inhabitant town had a debt of €2 million and changes needed to be made to pay off debts.
The team of 15 met and the rest of the staff told the mayor that they wanted to help.
They now clean municipal buildings, including the town hall, Casa de la Cultura, gym, multiple purpose centre and the library.
The Local Police, the dustman and the person in charge of maintaining the local parks and gardens are also taking care of the local streets and squares.
Until now, the town hall employed two cleaners and now there is only one, who cleans the local health centre and school.
