STUDIES have shown that two Asian fruits, the lychee and the longan have adapted well to the environmental conditions on the Axarquia coast.
Both fruits are highly popular in Europe and in Asia, as well as locally.
The study carried out by La Mayora Subtropical and Mediterranean Fruit and Vegetable Institute in Algarrobo is just one of what could be a long list, as the President of Malaga Provincial Government has signed an agreement with the institute to continue their work.
The aim is to produce several varieties of both fruits on a local plot to evaluate how they adapt and their quality once they are harvested.
If they are produced successfully, local farmers will be able to include them on their farms, diversifying the produce and improving quality.
The provincial government wants the Axarquia area to become the exclusive exporter of such products in Europe.
